Karen Luna
Nutrition Services Director, Santa Clara USD
Karen, as the Nutrition Services Director at Santa Clara USD, has been instrumental in transforming the district's food program since joining in July 2015. Her expertise and dedication have made a significant impact on the nutrition and well-being of the approximately 14,500 students across 30 schools.
With a deep understanding of the importance of good nutrition, Karen has successfully implemented initiatives to ensure that every student has access to healthy meals. Currently, 31% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, and Karen has made it her mission to provide nourishing options for all.
One of the highlights of Santa Clara USD's nutrition program is the District Farm. Spanning across 11 acres of land, this farm plays a vital role in supplying fresh produce to the students. Thanks to the expertise of our Farm Consultant, we are able to harvest an average of 6,000 pounds of produce every month. The current bounty includes delicious cantaloupes, juicy tomatoes, refreshing cucumbers, crisp apples, succulent plums, sweet peaches, hydrating watermelon, and vibrant bell peppers.
Karen's commitment to sustainability and supporting local agriculture has not only enriched the nutrition program but also created a sense of community within the district. By sourcing produce from our own farm, we reduce our carbon footprint and ensure that our students receive the freshest and highest quality ingredients.
In addition to the District Farm, Karen has also fostered partnerships with local farmers and suppliers. This collaboration allows us to offer a diverse range of meal options, accommodating various dietary needs and preferences. Whether it's vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergen-friendly, our nutrition program strives to provide inclusive and satisfying meals for every student
